At present, Zhi Wenyu, a young composer and member of the Chinese Musicians' Association, won the first prize of the 8th "Musica per archi" International Composition Competition in Ukraine with his work "Breath of the rain forest". On July 13, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra performed this work again in Bulgaria.
The "Musica per archi" International Composition Competition in Ukraine was founded in 2016. It is open to composers of different nationalities and ages worldwide, requiring them to create entries for a specified lineup (string orchestra or piano and string orchestra). Since its establishment, it has attracted over 300 composers from around the world to participate. The organizing committee of this year's competition received entries from 13 countries and regions. The competition has two rounds: preliminary evaluation and final. The final concert was presented by Roman Kresienko, the concertmaster of the LUMOS Orchestra and the resident conductor of the Lviv Philharmonic Orchestra, together with the KLK String Orchestra, featuring 14 finalist works.
In 2023, Zhi Wenyu graduated from the Composition Department of the Sichuan Conservatory of Music and, in the same year, began teaching at the School of International Communication and Arts of Hainan University. Before being admitted to the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, he lived in Hainan with his parents for many years. At that time, he didn't have a special affection for Hainan's music. But after years of study, when he came into contact with Hainan's regional culture again, he quickly found his creative direction and musical characteristics. Zhi Wenyu introduced that last year, the symphonic suite "Tropical Rainforest" planned by the School of International Communication and Arts of Hainan University where he works was approved as a key literary and artistic creation project for the three - year (2022 - 2024) topic selection plan in Hainan Province. Zhi Wenyu is responsible for creating two of the movements. During the creative field trip, he came into close contact with the tropical rainforest landscape of Hainan for the first time and was touched by the surging life energy within it. The sound of the entire work, as the musical state evolves, gradually expands the number of string groups, forming changes in the sounds of dots, lines, and sound clusters, thus reflecting the burst process of life energy in the rainforest. In terms of pitch materials, the melody material of the Hainan folk song "Wuzhi Mountain Song" is adopted. After reconstruction and design, it becomes the only pitch - series material throughout the work. Therefore, this work itself also has certain characteristics of minimalist and monophonic music.
In the past two years, Zhi Wenyu's works have frequently won awards. In 2022, "Shadow Game" won the third prize of the 18th China • Chengdu "Sunshine Cup" Student New Music Works International Competition, the first prize of the Composition Group and the Excellent Performance Award of the second "Talent Program" for postgraduates of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Hubei Conservatories of Music. The dance work "Sunrise and Sunset" (composed by him) won the nomination award of the 14th China Dance "Lotus Award" for Ethnic and Folk Dance Finals in 2023 and the 5th Nanhai Literature and Art Award (music category). "Breath of the rain forest" (chamber music version) won the Final Honor Award of the 2024 "V.C.M.A" International Composition Competition in Vienna, Austria; In August, his symphonic work "Sounding of Li Mountain" will have its premiere by the Symphony Orchestra of the Brazilian National Theater in Brazil.
